We recently shared a wonderful night with Steve White, ex of Style Council and now touring with Damon Minchella ex Ocean Colour Scene and Seamus Beaghen as Trio Valore (triovalore.com), where he showed us just how a drum kit should and can be be used.
He started the night with a few ‘chosen’ words about televised ‘talent’ contests and real proper music. I totally agreed with him and he returned to this theme several times.
The audience was of every age and as we would find out very talented indeed. Making his point about rehearsing he showed his total stick control using a single snare drum, pictured left, paradiddles, double paradiddles came and went with increasing speed. I have enough trouble with left, right, left, right and that’s just walking to the pub. He showed how it is possible to do left, right, right, left, left, right ... (I’m no drummer so I won’t show my self up any more) precisely and to great rhythmic effect.
Moving to a full but restrained kit he carried on with the parradiddles and our jaws continued to drop. Damon Minchella joined to add bass to the mix while we got our tongues back where they should be.
Break time and then it was the youngsters turn. Three lads, from 9 to 11, took to the second kit in turn, layed down a groove and Steve and Damon joined in. Good they were too.
On the point of rehearsing me mentioned a drummer who asked him to, ‘Make my kick drum technique great with out any practice’. Kids eh, well no an adult!.
The ‘Drum Shop’ at Heworth organised it all thanks Andy and Wes; and thanks to Steve and Damon for a great night.
So we are available for any size of workshop with any one at all, where ever you like. We can provide PA and lighting, video relay and hire of equipment if necessary. Please ‘phone 0774 2222 712 for bookings.
