live tracks

It is possible that you might lose your mind completely and decide you want to record you latest tunes ‘live’. There are number of ways to do this:

Firstly; a multi-track recording of the whole concert. This is where we go to a venue; put a mic and or a DI on every instrument; add a couple of effects mics to pick up the audience and connect it all to a studio mixing desk and a multi-track recorder. We then run away to the studio and post produce the session.

On the right are examples of live multi-track recordings; the first is of a full Symphony Orchestra and Chorus recorded during a performance, outside, at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland.

The second is of a pre-recorded backing track and a live children’s choir with overdubs of saxophone and lead vocal recorded in rehearsal. The track is an original by John Hudson and recorded for BBC ‘Children in Need, 2008’. Played on TV and radio up to and after the event, also as a music bed for TV highlights of the night. Video excerpts soon.

This way we can overdub the tracks if necessary and we get a bigger better final mix that has a recorded crowd reaction. It does cost more, but it is really worth it. More time is needed to set the gig up; and the results are stunning. (Add a some video footage; result one great video for YouTube and MySpace.)

The other way is a stereo recording from the desk while you play live. However, this option is really only a record of the gig. It will never sound like it did on the night, because the recorded sound will not include the sound of the of the guitar amps, drums etc as they are in the room and change through the gig. However have a listen to these recordings; they are of Bap Kennedy & Shogun Assassin. They will give you some idea of what is possible.

There is a middle way; where some of the performance/tracks are pre recorded and you add live tracks and audience reaction at the gig. Obviously this would involve you coming to the studio to record the songs first and then we decide which parts we want to record live, play back a click track or percussion through the monitors and you do your thing. (Some bands use play back of some tracks at every gig to give the audience the best possible experience. Tracks for this purpose can be recorded in the studio and transferred to a playback medium, usually CD or your multi-track recorder.
